The Aland Islands
With the proximity to the west coast and Sweden, food traditions on the Swedish-speaking Aaland Islands differ a lot from eastern Finland. Klimppisoppa, a flour dumpling soup is a regional speciality. Another staple is the Aaland pancake, which was typically made from leftover porridge, today often served with whipped cream and prune compote.
“Svartbröd”, a rye bread with black treacle is another regional delicacy which is prepared for two days and then, to improve flavour, laid to rest for another 48 hours after baking. But first and foremost, a vast range of fish dishes have been developed on the islands. Big apple orchards on the northern islands have contributed with fresh fruit and ingredients for desserts.
